Excerpt from The Beltane Companion: Flower Crown Intentions

Making a flower crown is a classic Beltane tradition—not to mention a lot of fun. Add an extra element of magic to this one by using it to set your spring intentions, especially any that have to do with creation and growth.

You will need:

  • White candle

  • Stick of incense

  • Fresh or faux flowers with sturdy stems, such as daisies, roses, or baby’s breath

  • Greenery such as eucalyptus or ferns to fill in gaps

  • Floral wire, floral tape, and scissors

  • Ribbon, optional

Use your preferred method for preparing for spellwork. Or: Take a few deep breaths and center yourself. When your energy is calm, continue to concentrate on your breathing, feeling your power rise. Light a white candle. Light a stick of incense of your choice and slowly draw a circle around yourself and your working space.

Measure the floral wire around your head to create a base that fits comfortably, leaving a little extra wire to twist and secure the ends together. Cover this wire base with floral tape to make it more comfortable to wear and provide a better surface for attaching flowers.

Reflect on the intentions you want to set for the season ahead. How do you want to grow? What do you want to create? Think about them as you create your crown. For each larger flower you add, assign it a specific intention.

Trim the flower stems to about 2–3 inches in length. Arrange the flowers in small bundles, combining blooms and greenery to create a pleasing composition. Using floral tape or additional wire, attach each bundle to the crown base, overlapping them slightly to hide the stems and create a continuous, seamless look. Continue around the crown, securing flowers tightly to ensure they stay in place. Once you've completed the circle, inspect the crown for any gaps and add extra blooms as needed. If desired, attach ribbons.

When you are ready, thank the universe for assisting you. Spin slowly in the opposite direction of the incense and blow out the candle. Wear your flower crown to a spring festival or leave it on your altar for the season. Remember your intentions each time you see it.

More About Beltane: Rituals, Spells, Lore

Beltane is an ancient Celtic festival that celebrates the coming arrival of summer, traditionally observed on May 1st in the northern hemisphere. It is one of the four major fire festivals in the witch’s year, alongside Samhain, Imbolc, and Lughnasadh. Rooted in Gaelic traditions, Beltane is a time of fertility, renewal, and the vibrant energy of life. Historically, communities would light great bonfires to honor the sun’s growing strength, believing the flames had protective and purifying powers. People and livestock would pass between two fires to receive blessings of health and prosperity for the season ahead. The festival also marked a time when the veil between worlds was thin, allowing for heightened spiritual connection and the honoring of nature spirits and deities. It’s the perfect time for practicing divination crafts such as tarot reading (and, of course, digging into your metaphysical books.)

Over time, Beltane became associated with joyous celebrations, including feasting, music, dancing, and the weaving of floral garlands. One of its most well-known traditions is the Maypole dance, in which participants weave colorful ribbons around a tall pole, symbolizing the union of earth and sky. The festival represents a time of abundance and passion. Though its roots lie in ancient pagan history and lore, Beltane is still widely celebrated today by those drawn to earth-based spirituality. Many modern celebrations and rituals seek to keep the spirit of Beltane alive, blending historical traditions with contemporary interpretations of nature’s cycles.
