Hidden Passage Cocktail

The old book didn’t come off the shelf when she pulled it. Instead, it stuck between two others. Grumbling, she set down her cocktail and pulled the book firmly. That’s when she heard a click and a creak . . . and the wall panel next to the bookshelf swung open.

Yield: 1 cocktail

  • 1 ½ oz dark rum

  • ½ oz amaretto

  • ¾ oz lime juice

  • ½ oz grenadine

  • 1 oz pineapple juice

  • Sprig of mint and a dried orange slice for garnish

  1. Fill a tall glass with crushed ice.

  2. In a shaker, combine dark rum, amaretto, lime juice, grenadine, and pineapple juice with ice.

  3. Shake vigorously and strain mixture into the glass.

  4. Garnish with a sprig of mint and a dried orange slice.

  5. Serve on a napkin inscribed with a hand-drawn map.

Zero-Proof Version: The Whispering Hall

  • 3 oz pineapple juice

  • 1 oz lime juice

  • ½ oz grenadine

  • Splash of sparkling water

  • Fresh mint and a lemon wheel for garnish

  1. Fill a champagne flute with crushed ice.

  2. In a shaker, combine pineapple juice, lime juice, and grenadine with ice.

  3. Shake vigorously and strain mixture into the glass.

  4. Top with sparkling water for a fizzy finish.

  5. Garnish with mint and a lemon wheel.

  6. Serve on a napkin inscribed with a hand-drawn map.
