Mabon Meditation

Mabon is a pagan festival that marks the autumn equinox, a time of balance when day and night are of equal length. Celebrated in late September, it is a time of gratitude for the harvest, reflection on the changing seasons, and preparation for the darker half of the year. In many spiritual traditions, Mabon is associated with themes of abundance, harmony, and letting go. It is often observed with feasting, offerings to nature, and rituals that honor the cycles of life and death. As the earth shifts from the warmth of summer to the cooler, introspective energy of fall, Mabon reminds us to find equilibrium in our own lives.

Mabon is an ideal time for meditation because it encourages inner balance and reflection. Just as nature transitions, we too can use this moment to assess what we have gained and what we need to release. Meditating during Mabon can help cultivate gratitude, set intentions for the coming months, and align with the shifting energies of the season. The equinox’s theme of balance makes it a perfect time to center the mind, acknowledge both light and darkness within, and find peace in the natural cycle of change. Whether through guided meditation, silent contemplation, or journaling, Mabon provides a powerful opportunity for spiritual growth and self-discovery.

And if you enjoy this, there are three more Mabon meditations featured in our new book, The Mabon Companion.

Make yourself comfortable and let your mind and body feel calm. Let's begin.

Transition Meditation

Welcome to this powerful Transition Meditation. As the Wheel of the Year turns once more, we arrive at Mabon, the sacred time of the autumn equinox. A moment of perfect balance, where day and night stand equal before the longer nights begin to take hold. This is a time of transition, a bridge between the warmth and abundance of summer and the quiet reflection of autumn. It is a time to pause, to acknowledge what has come to fruition, and to prepare for what lies ahead.

Find a comfortable position, either seated or lying down. Close your eyes gently, allowing your body to relax. Take a deep, cleansing breath in through your nose, filling your lungs with fresh, crisp autumn air. Hold it for a moment, and then exhale slowly, releasing all tension. Again, inhale deeply, feeling the cool breath moving through you, and exhale, letting go of the weight of the day. With each breath, imagine yourself becoming lighter, more open, more present.

Visualize yourself standing at the edge of a great forest at twilight. The golden light of the setting sun filters through the trees, casting long shadows and bathing everything in a warm, amber glow. The air carries the scent of earth and fallen leaves, a reminder that the season is shifting. You step forward onto a path covered in red and gold leaves, feeling the crispness beneath your feet.

This is a sacred space between two seasons. As you walk, reflect on all that has grown in your life over the past months, the ideas, the relationships, the lessons, and the successes. These are the fruits of your labor, the harvest of your efforts. Pause for a moment and acknowledge them. Give gratitude to all that has flourished, knowing that every season of growth brings wisdom and strength.

Now, as you continue along the path, the trees begin to change. Their leaves, once vibrant, begin to drift gently to the earth, surrendering to the cycle of nature. You watch them fall, effortless and graceful, and you recognize that you too are being called to let go. Change is not something to resist; it is a natural and necessary part of life’s rhythm.

Ask yourself:

  • What in my life is ready to be released?

  • What no longer serves me as I move forward?

Perhaps it is a fear, a doubt, an expectation, or a habit that no longer aligns with who you are becoming.

Imagine yourself holding this weight in your hands, feeling its presence one last time, and then, just as the trees release their leaves, allow yourself to let it go.

Feel the lightness that follows. The forest around you whispers of renewal, of cycles that never truly end, only transform. The night air is cool, reminding you that darkness is not to be feared but embraced as a time of rest and introspection.

Mabon teaches us that there is beauty in balance, in honoring both light and shadow, in holding gratitude for what was and hope for what will be.

Now, standing in the center of this sacred space, place your hands over your heart and whisper to yourself:

  • I honor this transition.

  • I trust the cycles of change.

  • I welcome balance into my life.

  • I let go of what is no longer good for me.

Feel these words take root within you, grounding you in the present moment, and strengthening your spirit for the journey ahead.

Take a deep breath in, fill your body with peace, and exhale, sealing this moment of transformation within you. Slowly, bring awareness back to the present, to the room around you. Wiggle your fingers and toes, feeling the energy of Mabon still flowing within.

And when you are ready, open your eyes, carrying with you the wisdom of transition, the grace of change, and the quiet strength of balance.
