Reviews of The Hedge Witch's Hearth

Here's what people are saying about our wonderful little book!

Midwest Book Review:

“Exceptionally well organized and presented, "The Hedge Witch's Hearth: Crafting and Nourishing Your Magickal Home" is the ideal DIY introduction to the craft as applied to daily life. A deft combination of spell book and instruction manual, "The Hedge Witch's Hearth" is informatively enhanced for the reader's benefit with the inclusion of a two page bibliography of Further Reading & Listening, and a four page Index. While unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, community, and college/university library Metaphysical Studies collections, it should be noted that "The Hedge Witch's Hearth" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $14.99).”

Conversations with Chickadees:

"This book is very well researched. I have enjoyed working through it—it gives me an entirely new view of my house!"

Musing Mystical:

"If you are seeking to deepen your magical practice or simply want to bring more intentionality into your home life, The Hedge Witch’s Hearth is a wonderful resource. Whether you’re seeking to learn more about hearth goddesses, gain insight from meaningful journal prompts, or simply seek to have many spells and recipes ready for whenever you need them, this book has you covered. It is a celebration of the home as a sacred space and a testament to the power of everyday magic to enhance the energy of one’s domicile." —Alanna Kali (Read the full review at Musing Mystical.)

Marissa Owens:

“Contrary to what the title The Hedge Witch's Hearth: Crafting and Nourishing Your Magickal Home conjures in your mind, spellwork and ritual isn't the overwhelming focus of this book, which makes the novice witch or curious reader the perfect audience. Instead of rigorous demanding recipes, there's a mix of interesting and unexpected information on goddesses known for each area of the home, crystals to amplify the energy you're wanting, and journal prompts to get you thinking about your individual spaces/rooms. The best part is that each chapter continues the hedge witch journey without allowing things to get stale or repetitive.”

Excerpt: Magical Housekeeping for Self-Care in the Bedroom

Your bedroom is your most private space. It’s your ultimate sanctuary, a place of restoration, of preparation for the day, and for your self-care. You can protect it from judgment, obligations, and negative energy. Treat it—and yourself—well by thinking of it as a sacred, special space of wellbeing.

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Maintaining your self-care routine is vital not only to your own wellbeing, but to the wellbeing of everyone in your complicated and beautiful web of connections. Take care of yourself, and pay attention to your wellbeing so you know when to concentrate on it more and when you might need to ask someone else for help. Your body, mind, and spirit are sacred gifts. Create the space you need to honor them. Even if you share a physical bedroom with someone else, find a way to carve out a special space for yourself.

In addition to self-care, your bedroom is of course ideal for restorative sleep. And you may want to be in touch with your dreams while you’re at it. Dream interpretation and divination have been used since ancient times; the divination part is called oneiromancy. Cultures as far back as the ancient Greeks and ancient Egyptians used dreams to predict the future, and prophetic dreams are all over the Christian Bible. And dream interpretation is still going strong today!

Modern science suggests that dreams may help the sleeper process their experiences during the day; while dreaming, you might even notice something you had encountered during the previous day, whether it’s an object, a person or situation, or a feeling. Not everyone remembers their dreams, but it’s thought that everyone dreams multiple times a night.

People use dream journals to work through challenges in their waking life, tap into their creativity, and learn more about themselves and their emotions. If you have any interest in dream journaling, dream interpretation, controlling your dreams, lucid dreaming, or the like, invest in your studies and practice. You may want to start by getting a dream dictionary and a blank journal.

And speaking of traditional bedroom activities, let’s not forget about sex magick. Sex with yourself or with another person (with their full consent and participation of course) can raise some very powerful energy, and orgasms can be a powerful manifestation tool. Try incorporating the energy you can raise by having an orgasm, when you are setting goals and intentions.

Sex can have major benefits, whether or not it is magickal. It’s good for your health, it relieves stress, and it boosts your confidence. And it helps you connect to, bond with, express your feelings for, and communicate with your partner, if you have one, or yourself.

And that brings us to romantic relationships. If you are in one, your sacred bedroom space is a shared space that reflects and nurtures your relationship without the interference of the outside world. The same energies that can support your love and care for yourself can support your love and care for each other. If you are looking for a relationship, the bedroom is a natural place to set your intentions and invite in love.

Bedroom Essentials

Getting a good night’s sleep is not only good for your self and soul, it’s good for your health. Sleep allows your brain to process and catch up, which affects your ability to learn and focus, your mood, and your memory. It’s good for your blood pressure and your blood sugar. It’s good for your immune system, which can help you fend off illness. And it can even help your physical performance!

So how can you use magical housekeeping to set up your bedroom to support your sleep habits? Ideally, you’ll want to set a fairly consistent schedule when it comes to the times you go to sleep and wake up, and you’ll want to remove as many electronic devices as possible from the room. Beyond that, you want to make your room as comfortable as possible. Is it quiet? Is it dark? Is it a comfortable temperature?

And then there’s the big question only you can answer: Is it relaxing? How could it be more relaxing? What is relaxing to you?

If you have trouble getting to sleep, lean in to your witchy side and make yourself a cup of tea. Reserve some time to settle in the evening before bed, and brew a cup of calming tea. You may know (or you’ll have to experiment to find out) what works for you, but common options include chamomile, lavender, valerian, and decaf green tea. Make yourself comfortable and slowly drink your tea, focusing on its warmth and smell and letting it go to work.

Your bedroom is also a wonderful place to practice your self-care routines. Build them into your morning and evening routines to make them habits.

And the bedroom is the perfect location for reminders that you are loved. If someone you love knitted you a sweater or quilted you a blanket, your bedroom can amplify its caring energy. If someone gave you a special photo, this is a great place to hang it. Even a child’s first carefully spun pot can find its place as a coin dish or bobby pin collector. Your goal is to love yourself in your bedroom, but let others love you too.

If you share your bedroom with a partner, the same practicalities apply when it comes to quiet, lighting, and temperature (compromise is an art). But as you design the room, keep in mind that it is not just your personal sanctuary anymore; it is also your sanctuary as a couple. Include the quilt made by your partner’s grandmother too.

Find and cherish the small private routines that you share. Make space for the shared crossword puzzle book, the sex toys, the hand lotion you fight over, and whatever else it is that bring you together. Choose decorations together too—perhaps images of your favorite places to go together, photos of you as a couple, or the like. Make it as meaningful for both of you as possible.

Magical Housekeeping Spell: Dreamy Dreams

This simple but effective sweet dreams charm can help protect you from nightmares and invite in good dreams.

You will need:

  • White candle

  • Stick of incense

  • Small blue, white, or silver drawstring bag

  • Rose quartz

  • Steel nail to protect from nightmares (or substitute another small steel item)

  • Black salt for protection (or substitute white sea salt)

  • Star anise for sweet dreams charm

  • Orange essential oil for rest and insightful dreams

  • Bergamot essential oil for sleep

Use your preferred method for preparing for spellwork. Or: Take a few deep breaths and center yourself. When your energy is calm, continue to concentrate on your breathing, feeling your power rise. Light a white candle. Light a stick of incense of your choice and slowly draw a circle around yourself and your working space.

Use incense to cleanse the drawstring bag and your ingredients. Then add the rose quartz, steel, salt, and anise to the bag, saying aloud what you hope each will bring you. Finish with a couple drops of orange and bergamot essential oils. Close the bag.

When you are ready, thank the universe for assisting you. Spin slowly in the opposite direction of the incense and blow out the candle. Place your sweet dreams charm under your bed and get a good night's sleep.
